Many buyers aspire to more senior procurement leadership positions. And many of those buyers think that the way to become a procurement leader is to do a good job at being a buyer. But it takes more than that.

Leadership positions require certain characteristics that buyer-level jobs don’t necessarily provide by default. Yet, you may have those characteristics. So, if you’re aiming for a leadership-level procurement position, make sure that your resume/CV includes these things:

Experience Leading People. A procurement leadership position requires more than just knowing a negotiation tactic that works on suppliers every time or being able to build a PivotTable in Excel to analyze spend. It requires being able to motivate people to accomplish goals. So, though you may not be in a supervisory role now, think of the things you have done that involved leading people: being the project manager or team lead for a project, being the head of a committee, etc. Include those types of things on your resume. They count more than you might expect.

Metrics Showing Improvement. Newly-appointed procurement leaders are often asked to begin “transformations” where they drive significant improvements in the organization. So, hiring managers want to fill these jobs with people who have a proven ability to make things better. What measurable improvements have you made in your work? Increased savings? Reduced late deliveries? Show these things on your resume/CV by indicating what the measurement was before and what you improved it to be. For example, “Improved on-time supplier deliveries from 82% in 2015 to 95% in 2016 to 99% in 2017.”

Distinctions Through Third Parties. Anyone can say that they are great at procurement. But hiring managers will believe it if third parties have validated that you are. Have you spoken at a conference? Been interviewed by a publication? Earned a certification? Any evidence that a third party recognized your skills as being above the norm should be included on your resume/CV to distinguish you from the competition.

Are you tired of not getting enough opportunities, respect, and money out of your procurement career?
