{"id":1693,"date":"2018-10-03T13:51:24","date_gmt":"2018-10-03T13:51:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.certitrek.com\/nlpa\/?p=1693"},"modified":"2021-08-12T09:21:37","modified_gmt":"2021-08-12T13:21:37","slug":"how-to-be-a-leaders-pet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.certitrek.com\/nlpa\/blog\/how-to-be-a-leaders-pet\/","title":{"rendered":"How To Be A \u201cLeader\u2019s Pet\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In grade school, I was a \u201cteacher\u2019s pet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was smart. \u00a0I was polite. \u00a0I always raised my hand first to answer their questions. \u00a0I picked up stuff when they dropped it.<\/p>\n<p>In short, I did a lot of things \u201cright\u201d to earn their admiration. \u00a0And this admiration turned into tangible rewards, too.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, we only have classroom teachers for so long in our lives. \u00a0Eventually, we transition to the work world and our authority figures aren\u2019t teachers, but leaders.<\/p>\n<p>So, what can you do to earn your leader\u2019s admiration? \u00a0To earn those tangible rewards? \u00a0To be \u201cleader\u2019s pet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Well, here are a few ideas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Get to the point. \u00a0<\/strong>Everyone says they are busy. \u00a0And, everyone feels that their time is valuable. \u00a0Especially business leaders whose paychecks prove that their time is valuable. \u00a0So, leaders hate people who beat around the proverbial bush and waste their time with too many words to communicate something simple. \u00a0But they love people who can be concise, speak in instantly understandable terms, and get to the point quickly. \u00a0Always try to communicate the most points with the fewest words when communicating with leaders.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t make excuses. \u00a0<\/strong>Almost everything important that has ever been done\u00a0was accomplished after obstacles were encountered. \u00a0Most obstacles make things difficult, but not impossible. \u00a0Because of your leader\u2019s elevated position, he or she has likely overcome many obstacles in his or her career rise. \u00a0So, the last thing a leader wants to hear is excuses why something can\u2019t be done. \u00a0So, embrace the tough assignment you are given or suggest a different way to accomplish the same or better end result. \u00a0When accepting an assignment, you can certainly state what the obstacles\u00a0are, but you should also state that you are up for the challenge.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be enthusiastically loyal.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0When you are a subordinate, lock into your leader\u2019s vision. \u00a0View your role as helping your leader take the organization where he or she wants it to go. \u00a0Either don\u2019t say anything negative about your leader or his\/her vision or be very careful not to have the wrong person know about your dissatisfaction. \u00a0Disloyalty and two-facedness can get back to your leader and make your work environment very awkward. \u00a0I\u2019m not saying to sacrifice your ethics or morals to be a good follower to a bad leader. \u00a0But, if you find yourself in a moral or ethical dilemma, you probably want to reevaluate whether you\u2019re in the right job.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I may add to this list in the future or link this post to additional posts on the topic. \u00a0So, I encourage you to check back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Recommended Reading<\/b><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lms.nextlevelpurchasing.com\/\">Millenials in Procurement<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lms.nextlevelpurchasing.com\/\">The Procurement Leader&#8217;s Guide to a More Successful Team<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lms.nextlevelpurchasing.com\/products\/procurement-team-certification-5-benefits-you-can-not-afford-to-ignore\">Procurement Team Certification: 5 Benefits You Can Not Afford to Ignore<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lms.nextlevelpurchasing.com\/\"><b>NLPA Learning<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b>\u00a0Looking for authoritative procurement templates, tools, webinars, and more?
