Don\u2019t Quit Procurement Jobs, They Quit Procurement Bosses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s an old saying:\u00a0 \u201cPeople don\u2019t quit jobs, they quit bosses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From\u00a0my 20+ years in procurement, I can confirm this phrase applies to the procurement workplace as much as it applies to any workplace.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, I sense that this may apply to the procurement workplace just a teeny-tiny bit more than some other environments.<\/p>\n<p>Why\u2019s that?<\/p>\n<p>Well, consider how some people become \u201cbosses\u201d in procurement.<\/p>\n<p>Many people are promoted to a procurement manager position because they were good buyers.\u00a0 They performed well at the classic things buyers do:\u00a0 negotiating low-cost deals, expediting supplier deliveries, replacing under-performing suppliers and the like.<\/p>\n<p>All of those responsibilities require a certain\u2026tenacity.\u00a0 The people that do well at those things\u00a0often have their personalities compared to that of a pit bull \u2013 one of the most aggressive breeds of dog*.\u00a0 Pit bulls\u00a0make good buyers.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0pit bulls may not make good procurement managers.\u00a0 Leadership positions require a whole new skill set than the positions that they supervise.<\/p>\n<p>Most of us know that taking a partnership approach with strategic suppliers is a\u00a0purchasing best practice.\u00a0 But, we also acknowledge that there is a place for tenacious negotiation with tactical suppliers and even during some phases of relationships with strategic suppliers.\u00a0 Abrasiveness in appropriate situations can often be shrugged off as \u201cjust business, nothing personal\u201d and \u201cpart of\u00a0the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But, dealing with subordinates is a different story.\u00a0 Abrasiveness has far fewer opportunities to be applicable.<\/p>\n<p>The smartest procurement professionals realize this.\u00a0 They can turn their abrasiveness level up or down, on or off at will.\u00a0 They choose to use their words, their tone of voice, and their demeanor as tools \u2013 carefully and strategically selecting the right tool for each situation.\u00a0\u00a0They can be a tenacious\u00a0pit bull one minute with a supplier and a caring labrador retriever with a subordinate the next.<\/p>\n<p>As such, organizations need to be careful who they select for their procurement leadership positions.\u00a0 While knowledge of procurement and demonstrated procurement success are important factors, leadership qualities are\u00a0at least equally important.<\/p>\n<p>And if you\u2019ve been promoted to a procurement leadership position, you need to do a self-evaluation of your leadership capabilities.\u00a0 Can you adapt your demeanor to the different situations that a procurement leadership position requires?\u00a0 Or are you more of a pure-bred pit bull?<\/p>\n<p>What scares me is that many procurement managers will admit to being a pure-bred pit bull but not care.\u00a0 They will repeatedly lose talent and not change a thing.\u00a0 They may blame\u00a0the hot economy\u00a0for providing the most \u201cgreener pastures\u201d for an entire generation of workers.\u00a0 Or, worse yet, they may take pride in losing people.\u00a0 They will feel like \u201cHa!\u00a0 Some people just aren\u2019t strong enough to work for me.\u00a0 That\u2019s fine.\u00a0 We\u2019ll weed out the weak and get only people who have thick skin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those types of bosses are unlikely to change because they see nothing wrong with losing people and nothing wrong with how they behave.<\/p>\n<p>But, in my opinion, if you lose talented people, you\u2019re simply a bad leader.\u00a0 If you\u2019re a tyrant, you won\u2019t be attracting the best and brightest talent.\u00a0 You\u2019ll be attracting people who put up with more crap than they should.\u00a0 People who have no backbone.<\/p>\n<p>And, as a procurement leader, if your team lacks the backbone to give themselves a rewarding career, will they have the backbone to do a good job with those classic buyer responsibilities I mentioned earlier?<\/p>\n<p>Unlikely.\u00a0 They are a submissive breed, much like the pug dog.\u00a0 Supplier price increase?\u00a0 OK.\u00a0 Supplier can\u2019t deliver on time?\u00a0 OK.\u00a0 Boss wants me to work the weekend?\u00a0 OK.<\/p>\n<p>Doesn\u2019t sound like a great buyer, eh?\u00a0 Well, those are the only people who will work for a pit bull.<\/p>\n<p>So, if you\u2019re a procurement leader and you are replacing employees who are quitting their procurement jobs, they may be quitting YOU.\u00a0 It\u2019s probably time for you to go to obedience school and work on being the best dog, er, procurement leader you can be.<\/p>\n<p><em>* Yes, I know that calling pit bulls aggressive is a stereotype and not true in many situations.\u00a0 But I wanted to be metaphorical with this post to drive home the point.\u00a0 Please excuse it and accept my apology for any offense that may be taken.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a
