This week, I\u2019ll be reviewing a whitepaper entitled \u201cDriving Lean through Your Supply Chain: The cultivation of a more efficient supplier network\u201d from Intek Plastics.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t miss updates on Procurement &amp; Supply Chain, Subscribe here!<\/p>\n<p>First off, I have to say that I really appreciate the fact that this is a whitepaper focused on working with suppliers on Lean initiatives. Many Lean resources talk almost exclusively about internal applications of Lean.<\/p>\n<p>As the basis for the whitepaper, the author concentrates on evaluating suppliers\u2019 adoption of Lean by centering the content around these five questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why do I need a Lean supply chain?<\/li>\n<li>Why are so many suppliers lagging in Lean?<\/li>\n<li>What will I gain by choosing Lean suppliers?<\/li>\n<li>What does a real Lean supplier look like?<\/li>\n<li>How can I tell if a supplier is really Lean?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is the last section that is packed with the most actionable information. A few of the many indicators of \u201ctrue Lean-ness\u201d that the author shares include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lean that Moves Beyond Manufacturing.<\/strong> The whitepaper says that \u201cYou should see evidence of Lean in accounting, new product development, sales, materials management, logistics, and even human resources.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Evidence of a Visual Factory.<\/strong> The whitepaper claims that \u201cWithin minutes of setting foot on a Lean supplier\u2019s production floor, you should see cues that it\u2019s a visual factory\u2026 [including] metrics boards, Kanban signals, standardized work and maintenance visuals.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Employee Engagement.<\/strong> Citing the fact that a well-done Lean program \u201cempowers and energizes employees,\u201d the whitepaper indicates that a \u201cbrief conversation about Lean with a production floor employee will speak volumes about the supplier you\u2019re assessing.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The whitepaper closes with a handy 15-Point Lean Supplier Checklist. My only complaint about this whitepaper is that it does not reach its potential for a comprehensive reference guide to implementing Lean in the supply chain. For example, while it references the importance of suppliers having value chain maps, it doesn\u2019t really explain the finer points of such maps or provide samples.
