Today, Part III will discuss a mistake that you probably never thought about. You may have the perfect answer to questions like \u201cWhere do you see yourself in five years?\u201d and \u201cTell me about a time when you overcame resistance of co-workers.\u201d But, if you mess this up, you\u2019re screwed (excuse the harsh term).<\/p>\n
What is this mistake?<\/p>\n
Messing up the interviewer\u2019s name.<\/p>\n
Some people have real pet peeves about having their names messed up. I am one of them.<\/p>\n
Yes, I have a last name that is a first name for some people. But, unless you are from a country where the \u201cfamily name\u201d (called a \u201clast name\u201d in the USA) is written before the \u201cgiven name\u201d (called a \u201cfirst name\u201d in the USA), I really don\u2019t think that there is an excuse for not knowing to call me \u201cCharles\u201d or \u201cMr. Dominick.\u201d<\/p>\n
When people call me \u201cDominick,\u201d I find it really annoying. And when interviewees call me \u201cDominick,\u201d I worry whether or not they have the intelligence necessary for whatever position they are interviewing for if they can\u2019t even figure out which name is my first name and which is my last.<\/p>\n
But I\u2019m not the only one that feels this way, believe me. There\u2019s a great post on collegiateperformancemagazine.com that talks about \u201cThe Value of a Name.\u201d<\/p>\n
So, when preparing for your next interview, do be prepared for all of the challenging questions. But also take a minute to learn the name of the person you\u2019ll be speaking with.
