One of the most common questions procurement professionals ask once they start thinking about earning a purchasing certification like the SPSM\u00ae<\/sup> is: \u201cWhat are the benefits of being certified?\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a fair question. And one that\u2019s easy to answer.<\/p>\n

First, procurement professionals who have the SPSM\u00ae<\/sup> Certification earn more money than those who don\u2019t. Our research indicates it. Purchasing Magazine\u2019s research indicates it. And we\u2019re talking over $10,000 per year more.<\/p>\n

Second, procurement professionals who have the SPSM\u00ae<\/sup> Certification save their employers more money than those who don\u2019t. And what happens when you perform like that for your employer? Naturally, your career tends to be more successful.<\/p>\n

Occasionally, someone will still not \u201cget it.\u201d They may say something like \u201cI\u2019ve been in procurement for x years. There\u2019s no substitute for real-world experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yes, real-world experience is valuable. But why should having experience dissuade you from earning a certification?<\/p>\n

What is the benefit of NOT being certified?<\/p>\n

Is there a benefit to not being certified? Or is fear of failure guiding decisions to keep one\u2019s qualifications status quo?<\/p>\n

When it comes to certification, procurement professionals need to realize that coming up short on a certification exam should be viewed as a \u201ctemporary defeat\u201d not a \u201cfailure.\u201d I learned the concept of temporary defeat vs. failure by reading the book \u201cThink & Grow Rich.\u201d Here are some excerpts from that book that I\u2019ve found inspirational and you might, too:<\/p>\n

\u201cRemember when your plans fail, that temporary defeat is not permanent failure\u2026Thomas A. Edison \u2018failed\u2019 ten thousand times before he perfected the incandescent light bulb. That is \u2014 he met with temporary defeat ten thousand times, before his efforts were crowned with success\u2026No man is ever whipped, until he QUITS \u2014 in his own mind\u2026If you give up before your goal is reached, you are a \u2018quitter.\u2019 A QUITTER NEVER WINS \u2014 AND \u2014 A WINNER NEVER QUITS.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, whether it is pursuing a certification or anything else, do not fear failure. And also think about this \u2013 if you fail the SPSM\u00ae<\/sup> Exam, it\u2019s only $75 to retake it.<\/p>\n

Back to the question asked in the subject of this post\u2026There is no benefit to NOT being certified. No one ever hired someone and said \u201cYou got the job because you were the only candidate WITHOUT a certification.\u201d No one ever got a pay increase accompanied by a note that said \u201cCongratulations on another year that you resisted getting a certification.\u201d<\/p>\n
