How can you avoid this?<\/p>\n<p>I like to defer to a few questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWhat is the worst consequence that could happen if I bought the standard version of the service or technology?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cHow much would that consequence cost my organization?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIs the cost of the customization greater than the cost of the consequence?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhat really is the goal here and how much more does a customization contribute to the achievement of that goal?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIf customization wasn\u2019t possible, what would happen?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Objectively, many of the customizations that are insisted on really aren\u2019t necessary. So, if you are tempted to customize the procurement services and technologies you\u2019re buying, I encourage you to really scrutinize whether they are must-haves or just nice-to-haves.<\/p>\n<p>Because they do come at a cost. A cost in money and a cost in time.<\/p>\n<p>Are they really worth it?
