{"id":2941,"date":"2010-08-26T19:06:00","date_gmt":"2010-08-26T19:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.certitrek.com\/nlpa\/2010\/08\/26\/predictions-for-the-economy-offshoring-part-i\/"},"modified":"2021-07-27T09:19:45","modified_gmt":"2021-07-27T13:19:45","slug":"predictions-for-the-economy-offshoring-part-i","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.certitrek.com\/nlpa\/blog\/predictions-for-the-economy-offshoring-part-i\/","title":{"rendered":"Predictions For The Economy &amp; Offshoring, Part I"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 100%\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia\">According to a recent article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, a Pennsylvania State Senator is preparing legislation that would \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia;font-size: 100%\">prevent large, nonprofit institutions from outsourcing work to foreign countries\u201d with offenders being stripped of their non-profit status. Though this legislation is in its early stages, aimed at non-profits, and isolated to Pennsylvania, I predict that legislating \u201chiring American\u201d for for-profit companies is going to be an emerging political theme in the months ahead.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t miss updates on Procurement &amp; Supply Chain, Subscribe here!<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: georgia\">\n<p style=\"font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size: 100%\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 100%\">Sure, there was opposition to<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 100%\">offshoring over the past few years.<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 100%\">But when the unemployment rate in the USA is 4% and American consumers are enjoying low prices on the products they buy, the opposition doesn\u2019t have much force.<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 100%\">However, in today\u2019s economy, when the unemployment rate has been flirting with double digits for an extended period of time, the argument for bringing millions of offshored jobs back is starting to look more persuasive.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: georgia\">\n<p style=\"font-family: georgia\">\n<p style=\"font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size: 100%\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 100%\">As I see it, there are only a few things that can bring jobs back:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 100%\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 100%\">Legislating more taxes for organizations that offshore<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 100%\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 100%\">Legislating tax relief for organizations that bring offshored jobs back to the USA<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 100%\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 100%\">An economic recovery where the unemployment rate will drop to historically normal levels<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 100%\"><span style=\"font-size: 100%\">Voluntary efforts on the part of American employers to restructure their workforces to be composed of a greater percentage of US citizens<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.5in;text-indent: -0.25in;font-family: arial\"><!--[endif]--><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.5in;text-indent: -0.25in;font-family: arial\"><!--[endif]--><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: georgia\">\n<p style=\"font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size: 100%\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 100%\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size: 100%\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 100%\">Let\u2019s discuss the likelihood of these things happening in reverse order:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 100%\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 100%\">Employers volunteering to hire more Americans?<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 100%\">At higher wages?<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 100%\">As great as a branding strategy this may be, I don\u2019t foresee employers doing this in today\u2019s uber-cost-competitive environment.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 100%\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 100%\">An economic recovery?<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 100%\">What is going to spur that?<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 100%\">What is that magic industry that is going to emerge that will suddenly create demand for all of these workers?<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 100%\">I don\u2019t see one without some really bad problem to solve (e.g., a terrorist attack, a cyber-crime outbreak, etc.) which would likely kill more jobs than it would create.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 100%\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 100%\">Legislating tax relief?<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 100%\">I believe that labor cost arbitrage would still offer more margin than the government would have available to reimburse.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 100%\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;font-size: 100%\">Legislating more taxes?<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: arial;font-size: 100%\">As unpleasant as that sounds to me as a business owner, it seems the easiest way to make a difference.<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: arial;font-size: 100%\">And politicians seem to prefer things being easy rather than fair.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.5in;text-indent: -0.25in;font-family: arial\"><!--[endif]--><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.5in;text-indent: -0.25in;font-family: arial\"><!--[endif]--><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.5in;text-indent: -0.25in\"><!--[endif]--><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: georgia\">\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia;font-size: 100%\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia;font-size: 100%\">There are some other implications of the economic situation that I\u2019ll cover
