As you may have guessed, this article was preceded by \u201c\u2018Outbuying\u2019 Your Internal Customers, Part I.\u201d\u00a0 You\u2019re kinda smart like that<\/p>\n
Anyway, this whole \u201coutbuying\u201d concept is rooted in the notion that a procurement department should be better at procurement than their internal customers.\u00a0 Sounds almost irritatingly logical, but one of the main reasons that procurement policies fail to get solid compliance is that many internal customers think that the procurement department doesn\u2019t buy as well as they can.\u00a0 Sadly, some of them are right but that\u2019s beside the point.<\/p>\n
Now, a well-trained procurement department should be able to do the seven things described in these two articles much better than any non-procurement professional can.\u00a0 But, that\u2019s not the end of it.<\/p>\n
These seven things are pretty foundational and don\u2019t even address the more strategic ways that procurement can contribute to organizational success.\u00a0 Try this\u2026<\/p>\n
Imagine yourself on a game show.\u00a0 Your job is to answer questions better than your opponent does.\u00a0 In this case, your opponent is an internal customer of yours\u2026and let\u2019s say that this internal customer is your procurement department\u2019s most vocal critic.\u00a0 You know, the one who always buys from his own suppliers.\u00a0 A maverick.\u00a0 A rogue.\u00a0 And he not only wants to win this game show, he wants to annihilate and embarrass you!<\/p>\n

Hopefully, you\u2019ve imagined yourself outshining your internal customer\/opponent.\u00a0 If these questions have made you a little uncomfortable because your procurement department doesn\u2019t exactly have its act together in these areas, it may be time for a little (or a big) improvement.<\/p>\n
