{"id":3325,"date":"2014-06-05T08:30:00","date_gmt":"2014-06-05T08:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.certitrek.com\/nlpa\/2014\/06\/05\/skills-needed-for-procurement-success-are-shifting\/"},"modified":"2023-07-25T11:40:16","modified_gmt":"2023-07-25T15:40:16","slug":"skills-needed-for-procurement-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.certitrek.com\/nlpa\/blog\/skills-needed-for-procurement-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Skills Needed For Procurement Success Are Shifting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif\">Since 2002, the Next Level Purchasing Association has been publishing its annual \u201cPurchasing &amp; Supply Management Career &amp; Skills Report.\u201d\u00a0 Each year\u2019s report reveals something interesting about the skills and training needed for measurably successful procurement, and 2014\u2019s report is no exception.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif\">This year\u2019s report was based on data collected in a survey of over 1,100 purchasing and supply management professionals from around the world.\u00a0 One of the questions asked of these participants is \u201cWhat is the most important skill in purchasing and supply management?\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t miss updates on Procurement &amp; Supply Chain, Subscribe here!<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">As has been the case in every year within the last seven years (the \u201cRecent Reporting History\u201d), the top four skills account for over half of the responses. However, the movement among those top four skills from last year to this year is very telling.\u00a0 Two movements in particular make noteworthy statements about how the purchasing and supply management function is evolving.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">First,\u201dPlanning &amp; Strategizing\u201d was voted the #2 skill in purchasing and supply management for the first time in Recent Reporting History. This is a statistical<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\"> indication that backs up the long-held belief that corporate purchasing is continually getting more strategic and less tactical. Purchasing and supply management professionals are spending more of their time planning and strategizing and less of<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\"> their time placing orders and expediting.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Second, for the first time in Recent Reporting History, \u201d Supplier Management &amp; Development\u201d was considered a more important skill than \u201cSourcing &amp; Supplier Selection.\u201d That is an indication that purchasing and supply management professionals are seeing value in spending more of their time working with improving the performance and capabilities of existing suppliers than continually finding new suppliers. Of course, purchasing and supply management departments will always need to do both.
