{"id":3339,"date":"2014-07-14T15:56:00","date_gmt":"2014-07-14T15:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.certitrek.com\/nlpa\/2014\/07\/14\/what-takes-longer-training-cats-and-dogs-or-implementing-a-procurement-solution\/"},"modified":"2021-07-08T08:42:54","modified_gmt":"2021-07-08T12:42:54","slug":"what-takes-longer-training-cats-and-dogs-or-implementing-procurement-solution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.certitrek.com\/nlpa\/blog\/what-takes-longer-training-cats-and-dogs-or-implementing-procurement-solution\/","title":{"rendered":"What Takes Longer: Training Cats and Dogs or Implementing a Procurement Solution?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif\">Have you ever tried to train a cat or dog?\u00a0 Was your pet agreeable and quickly learned the desired behaviors?\u00a0 Or did you have to pay for someone else to train (your dog) or just give up (your\/my cat)? \u00a0Multiply that frustration by 101 and you now know the pain of a system rollout or implementing a procurement solution for most organizations.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif\">So, leaving out the overall costs involved (that\u2019s a whole different blog post!) how long does it take to implement software, SaaS, or cloud-based procurement solutions?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif\">While this is a rather broad question, it is one of great importance.\u00a0 I\u2019ve witnessed firsthand the distractions involved with large ERP and CRM rollouts, the worst being a disastrous ERP implementation.\u00a0 For the better part of 14 months, our entire corporate office (an energy company) was at the mercy of multiple outside consultants.\u00a0 The accidental deletion of a critical financial database without a working backup was the straw that broke the camel\u2019s back and chased the very expensive implementation team out the door permanently.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif\">According to Aestiva Software, a basic software-based procurement system requires four to eight weeks for installation from the specification stage to final deployment.\u00a0 Even though this is considered a basic procurement system, I find this to be extremely aggressive. It does not necessarily take into consideration the size and skill set of the IT department at the client site.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif\">Now, SaaS and cloud solutions offer much greater flexibility and security from such incidents as above, but they still can potentially put your business in a state of flux if you have not properly assessed and prepared for such an implementation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t miss updates on Procurement &amp; Supply Chain, Subscribe here!<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif\">Implementing a Procurement Solution Correctly<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif\">Recently, Maher Zebib, Vice President \u2013 Procurement at Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, stated that their procurement technology, \u201cjumped from software-based to straight into the cloud\u201d.\u00a0 Zebib added, \u201cThe decision was based on many factors, but the best thing was the speed of deployment\u201d.\u00a0 Using an Ariba procurement solution, it took Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank only eight days from the signing of the contract to running their first tender in the cloud.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif\">I would suggest there were vast resources available from both Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank and Ariba to make this solution come to fruition so quickly and successfully.\u00a0 However, I think the most important comment Zebib made was in regards to customization:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif\">\u201cKeep it out of the box.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif\">Don\u2019t try and customize \u2013 the more you customize, the more you spend time and work drags on. Take the solution as is \u2013 configure it to your needs \u2013 but don\u2019t try and customize. These are usually best-in-class solutions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif\">Why \u201cWe\u2019re Unique\u201d Doesn\u2019t Matter<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif\">The comment \u201cwe\u2019re unique\u201d has come from the mouth of every CEO or leadership stakeholder I have ever spoken to.\u00a0 But, is your business \u201cso unique\u201d that it is worth the pain and misery of a customized solution?\u00a0 My answer is a definite NO!\u00a0 Regardless of all the time, effort and money spent customizing, you will still find people having to do workarounds for certain procedures somewhere down the road and sooner rather than later.<i><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif\">We here at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.certitrek.com\/nlpa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Next Level Purchasing Association<\/strong><\/a> would love for you to share your stories of the implementation of your procurement solution.
