Sourcing Resume Writing Tips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A good friend of mine recently found himself looking for a job in the purchasing\/supply chain\/procurement\/strategic sourcing realm. \u00a0He asked me to pass along his resume to any employer in my network who may be looking for talent such as his.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t miss updates on Procurement &amp; Supply Chain, Subscribe here!<\/p>\n<p>I just. \u00a0Couldn\u2019t. \u00a0Do it.<\/p>\n<p>Why not?<\/p>\n<p>Well, his resume simply looked sloppy to me. \u00a0I thought his resume didn\u2019t represent him in a good light. \u00a0And, perhaps selfishly, it wouldn\u2019t represent me in a good light by telling respected colleagues that this guy is the greatest thing since sliced bread but handing them a resume that clearly had some issues.<\/p>\n<p>I gave him some tips to clean up his resume to better reflect his talent. \u00a0But you don\u2019t have to be a long-time friend of mine to get tips for cleaning up your strategic sourcing resume. \u00a0Here\u2019s what I encouraged my friend to do and what I encourage you to do as well:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Make sure there is not a single spelling error in your resume.<\/strong> \u00a0Most strategic sourcing jobs require employees who have a razor-sharp attention to detail. \u00a0Spelling errors illustrate a clear lack of attention to detail (man, I hope there are no spelling errors in this post!). \u00a0Your strategic sourcing resume can be a deciding factor of whether you get to compete for a job that will pay you hundreds of thousands of dollars over the next few years. \u00a0If something so important wasn\u2019t worth your effort to double-check for spelling errors, an employer will assume that you\u2019ll be even more sloppy with projects that are less personally important to you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Convert run-on sentences into a higher number of\u00a0shorter sentences. \u00a0<\/strong>When one writes things like a \u201ccareer objective,\u201d it\u2019s easy to try to cram all of your skills, accomplishments, desires, etc. into a sentence of biblical proportions. \u00a0It\u2019s better to throw a darn period in there every now and then and start a new sentence. \u00a0There\u2019s no rule that says your career objective has to be one sentence. \u00a0Dedicate a separate sentence to each idea you want to convey.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Realize that white space is your friend. \u00a0<\/strong>When\u00a0your fate of competing for a good job depends so much on how well your resume sells you, it\u2019s tempting to cram everything good about your career into that document. \u00a0And it\u2019s OK to have a lengthy resume. \u00a0But don\u2019t make it look crammed. \u00a0Don\u2019t shrink your margins to 0.1\u2033. \u00a0Use the enter button to separate the jobs you list. \u00a0Do what I\u2019ve done in this post and so many other posts and purchasing articles I\u2019ve written: \u00a0use bullet points. \u00a0If something looks intimidating to read, it likely won\u2019t be read with the attention with which you need it to be read. \u00a0Look at the page. \u00a0Do you see a good balance of text and white space? \u00a0Or all text?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Steer clear of industry-specific jargon.<\/strong> \u00a0Strategic sourcing often requires being an expert with certain categories, products or services. \u00a0The industries of those categories, products and services often\u00a0involve jargon that is meaningless in other industries. \u00a0As such, a resume reader may have no idea what you\u2019re writing about if you use industry-specific jargon but you\u2019re applying for a job in another industry. \u00a0For example, my friend used the acronym \u201cASI\u201d in his resume in several places. \u00a0I had no idea what ASI\u00a0was. \u00a0Turns out, it meant \u201cad specialty industry.\u201d \u00a0I was going to forward his resume to the strategic sourcing director at a refractory. \u00a0I have a feeling that \u201cASI\u201d would be equally meaningless to him. \u00a0And, if a resume reader encounters something that frustrates them about your\u00a0resume, it\u2019s not going to help your cause and may very well hurt it. \u00a0My recommendation is that, if you have to refer to jargon in your resume, define it the first time you use it. \u00a0For example, I would revise a sentence in the resume from \u201cWas responsible for strategically sourcing ASI items\u201d to \u201cWas responsible for strategically sourcing ad specialty industry (ASI) items.\u201d \u00a0Then, it\u2019s OK to leave the remaining references to ASI intact. \u00a0You\u2019ve done your job to make sure the reader knows what ASI is.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim for consistency.<\/strong> \u00a0Strategic sourcing executives have a lot in common with the stereotypical accountant. \u00a0They like things crisp, clean, neat. \u00a0Sometimes, obsessively so. \u00a0And it puts them into a tizzy when things are out of alignment. \u00a0In my friend\u2019s resume, he started off each job section with phrases like \u201cResponsible for strategically sourcing\u2026\u201d, \u201cHad responsibility for supervising\u2026\u201d, \u201cIn charge of managing a strategic sourcing staff of\u2026\u201d, etc. \u00a0That may not be a problem for many. \u00a0But for the executives who value consistency in communications, it\u2019s bothersome. \u00a0Maybe I\u2019m one of those executives because it bothered me! \u00a0And you don\u2019t want the reader of your resume to be bothered. \u00a0Again, strategic sourcing requires a lot of well-executed written business communication and consistency is a component of well-executed written business communication.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eliminate pet peeves of detail-oriented readers.<\/strong> \u00a0Here are a few things I hate that I think make written communications \u2013 including strategic sourcing resumes \u2013 sloppy: bullet points that begin with lower-case letters, words that are unnecessarily capitalized (e.g., my friend had the word \u201creplenishment\u201d capitalized for some reason), dates that don\u2019t make sense (e.g., my friend had his college dates in the format mm-dd-yyyy, making it look like he went to each college for one day), bad grammar, etc. \u00a0You want a job that requires attention to detail? \u00a0Challenge yourself to create a strategic sourcing resume\u00a0that demonstrates attention to detail!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In strategic sourcing, we have to communicate a lot of important things in writing. \u00a0Good written communication ensures we identify the right supplier, tell them the right work to perform, and have our obligations \u2013 and those of the supplier \u2013 clearly documented. \u00a0Your strategic sourcing resume is your audition for showcasing your capabilities at communicating in writing. \u00a0Write it well and you get to compete for any job you\u2019re qualified to do. \u00a0Write it poorly and you\u2019ll wonder why you\u2019re so qualified but can\u2019t even get a return call. \u00a0Apply these tips and maximize your chances of competing for the strategic sourcing job of your dreams!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A good friend of mine recently found himself looking for
